Dietary fiber, commonly known as roughage is the indigestible portion of food derived from plants. It consists of soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. The soluble fiber dissolves in water and is easily metabolized into physiologically active metabolites and gases. Soluble fiber is found in oats, peas, beans, apples, citrus fruits, carrots, barley and psyllium. The insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve in water and is not metabolized, but provides bulking by absorbing water as it moves through the digestive tract, decreasing the transit time and facilitating defecation by softening the stool.

Whole-wheat flour, wheat bran, nuts, beans and vegetables, such as cauliflower, green beans and potatoes, are good sources of insoluble fiber. Chemically, dietary fiber consists of non-starch polysaccharides such as arabinoxylans, cellulose, and many other plant components such as resistant starch, resistant dextrins, inulin, lignin, waxes, chitins, pectins, beta-glucans, and oligosaccharides.

The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of dietary fiber for Indians is 15.7 g, as per the recommendations of the Expert Group of the ICMR (NIN, Hyderabad, 2009).

The Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labeling) Regulations, 2011 has stipulated that the complete nutritional information of all types of packaged food must be clearly mentioned on the label of the prepackaged food. These FSSAI regulations stipulate that every package of biscuits, bread and cakes containing Oligofructose shall bear the following declaration, namely:

Contains Oligofructose (dietary fiber)……………………..g/100 g
