Heavy Metals in Food Testing Lab Delhi, Bangalore India

Heavy Metals in Food
Food Testing Lab for Heavy Metals in Food

Our food testing lab carries out tests for heavy metals in a variety of food products for compliance with the requirements laid down by FSSAI under the, Food Safety and Standards Act.for the Indian market and by USFDA, EU and many other importing countries.

Our lab is accredited by NABL and approved by EIC, BIS and authorized by Food Safet and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for the tensing of heavy metals in food samples.

Some of the common metals tested in our food testing lab are –

  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Methyl mercury
  • Arsenic
  • Cadmium
  • Chromium and Chromium 6
  • Tin
  • Copper
  • Zinc
  • Nicke
  • Selenium l

Among these, the main heavy metals found in food are arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead. These chemical elements have a relatively high density and are toxic even at low concentrations. Heavy metal toxicity can have several health effects. They can damage and alter the functioning of the brain, liver, and lungs.

The heavy metal analysis in food is the only way to screen levels of toxic metals in it. Having a check on metals in food can protect us from acute and chronic effects of heavy metal toxicity.

Heavy Metals are natural part of the environmental and they easily find way in to our water, food and environment. Regardless of how they enter the food cycle, they disturb the normal functioning of the body metabolism and can accumulate in the body causing severe toxicity.

To protect the consumers regulatory bodies across the world have established regulations with stringent limits on the permitted levels of heavy metals in different food products.

Heavy metals in food occur both naturally and as a result of human activities. Also, some foods and beverages like green leafy vegetables, fishes, unfiltered water, and brown rice contain higher levels of heavy metals. Therefore, heavy metal testing in food and beverages is paramount for determining the toxicity in them and understanding its interactions with other compounds.

This makes it important for food industry to ensure that their products are free from these toxic elements by regularly testing  their ingredients and products for compliance with the regulatory requirements. Hence, the food industry relies on laboratory tests that use scientific analysis to identify heavy metals in food products.

There are mainly three types of heavy metals testing methods.

1. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP MS) is the most advanced method for analyzing all types of metals in the food. This is a quantitative method that offers very low detection limits, in the part per trillion level range. ICP MS is highly sensitive and accurate for heavy metal testing in food and is considered a gold standard lab test.

2. Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP- OES) is a trace-level metal analysis method and is mainly used for samples with high total dissolved solids (TDS) or suspended solids. This lab test is reliable for testing groundwater, wastewater. ICP- OES can also be used for drinking water analysis and other beverages.

3. Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) is a lab test primarily used to analyze compounds in a solution. As such, AAS is often used in heavy metal analysis in food and beverages.

We routinely conduct testing for heavy metals in various food samples like honey, milk, cheese, namkeen, snacks, cooked foods, dietary supplements, alcoholic beverages, juices and drinks and many more

Our food testing labs are equipped with the latest equipment like Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) for testing heavy metals in food ingredients and products.

  1. Looking to test a plant-based protein powder for heavy metals as an individual, not a company. Looking for a budget option.
